My Current Favorite Hair Routine : September 2009
It seems that there is a quite popular tag circulating Youtube right now about hair routines. Well, I decided to join the bandwagon and share with you some of my favorite hair products of the moment. My hair routine usually changes every few months because I try to rotate and try out new products often.
Shampoo : Shiseido Tsubaki Golden Repair Shampoo ($8.99)
The Shiseido Tsubaki hair care collection comes in 2 different lines that targets various kind of hair needs. The red line is for normal hair. The white (golden) line is for damaged hair. This is my second bottle already, and it is absolutely amazing. What I expecially love about this is the fact that it foams up so easily, taking less time when washing your hair and also cause less possible damages to the hair.

Conditioner : Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Daily Conditioner ($14.25)
This is also my second bottle, which just shows how much I love it. Joico is a professional salon hair care brand and can be purchased at most hair salons and beauty stores such as Ulta. I did noticed that this 2nd bottle is more liquidy than the previous one, but this does not affect the product. It also has a very nice floral scent but is not overwhelming.
Treatment : Shiseido Tsubaki Treatment with Camellia Oil EX ($11.99)
Another superstar from the Shiseido Tsubaki Collection. The treatment is very nutritious for the hair but is not over powering and do not weight down the hair. As many other treatments and hair masks, I use this once per week. I also do not use conditioner on the day when I use this.
Supplement : Skin Food Extra Virgin Olive Essence (5,500 won / about $5)
Skin Food is one of the biggest Korean cosmetic brands. Its products, ranging from makeups to skincare, is all made from natural ingredients, making it a very unique and popular Asian beauty brand. This hair essence can be used on cleaned hair both wet or dry. Spray some product onto your hands, rub it a bit to warm it up, and apply it all over the bottom section of the hair. It will keep your hair friz free and shinny all day long.

Sewame Spots Removing And Trace Free Essence : Don't Even Bother With It
Although I have very oily skin, I am very fortunate to usually not have acne problems. However, occasionally I do have a few pimples pop up here and there. Recently, I was very busy with work and couldn't really sleep that well. Well, no surprise that a few red spots showed up on my forehead. Then my mom recommended me the Sewame Spots Removing And Trace Free Essence ($10), which is a stable product she uses on my sister who is going through that teenage pimples phrase.
According to my mom, this is a "magical" product. Well, I certainly could not agree with her. After trying it out for a few weeks, I have to say that it does not do much to my pimples or old acne spots. The product is a very light textured clear gel and has a very faint floral scent. The gel is very cooling and is easy to absorb. This is a spot treatment so it is not meant to be used all over the face. This essence is better suited for just emerging pimples. For pimples that have turned red or scarred, there is not much the product can do.
More about the brand : Paris Sewame is a skincare line that was created by Ausnow in 2002. The collection focuses on acne treatments.

Beauty Babble: Second Thought About Advance Technology And Beauty
I've noticed that more and more beauty products nowadays advertise that they are produced with nanotechnology.
More about the idea : Nanotechnology, shortened to "nanotech", is the study of the controlling of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Generally nanotechnology deals with structures sized 100 nanometers or smaller in at least one dimension, and involves developing materials or devices within that size.
Nanotechnology is commonly used to break down particles into extremely small units. It is widely integrated in cosmetic productions these days due to the popular belief that the tinier the particles in a skincare product are, the higher ability that products has to penetrate our skin, and thus leads to more effective benefits. However, a recent research study conducted by an university in Taiwan concluded that nano particles may cause damages to our lungs because these particles are a lot smaller than normal particles in the air. They irritate our lungs and may cause damages to lung tissues and may also leads to fluid accumulation. In addition, it can lead to impaired gas exchange and may cause respiratory failure.
The research study's experimental group (the group that breathed in nano particles) appeared to have lung infections due to the irritation from the particles. It also proved that even just skin contact could lead to similar negative effects.

Bare Escentuals bareMinerals SPF 15 Matte Foundation : Savior For My Oily Skin
For oily girls like myself, to achieve that matte and shine free look is a life long journey. I've had my fair shares of trying out different foundations. So far, nothing gives me that long lasting matte finish all day long without some kind of extra help such as an oil control primer. So what else can I say. The search for that dream foundation continues. Well, I want to say that the search seems to be paying off. I took a trip to Sephora a few days ago and scored the newly launched Bare Escentuals bareMinerals SPF 15 Matte Foundation ($28), which is the sister product to the original bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation ($25).
More about the product : bareMinerals Matte SPF 15 Foundation absorbs excess oil and eliminates shine without drying your skin. It dramatically improves the appearance of your skin through the clinically proven power of RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex, which minimizes pores and promotes cell turnover for fresher, smoother skin, while protecting your skin from environmental damage. This groundbreaking formula is made with only the purest, highest-quality ingredients and is free of harsh chemicals and preservatives.
The new matte foundation has a light to medium coverage with great buildable ability. It also minimizes pores amazingly. I have pretty big pores on my cheeks and nose area. The foundation was able to cover everything so well that they are hardly noticeable. What is the best about this is that it stays matte on my face all day long, and I really mean it. I am shine free for at least 8+ hours, even during hot Summer months. I was sweating a lot when I tested the foundation the other day, and it did not slide off my face. Another applause for it. I can sing praise for it all night long, and I seriously, for the first time, can not find any negative things to say about this. Plus, if you have tried the original foundation before, then you would know how much mess the package can be. The new matte foundation has a new clip cover inside the cap so it keeps the powder safely inside. Easy and clean.
After 6+ hours of wearing the foundation without any touch up.

KAO Prettia Soft Bubble Hair Color : For Bubbly And Heavenly Looking Hair
I consider myself a latecomer with hair dyes. I didn't start to dye my hair on a regular basis until college. Ever since then, I usually change my hair color 2-3 times per year. I try to not doing it more frequently to avoid even greater damages to my hair. Since it has been a few months now since I last dyed my hair, I decided to give myself a makeover and give my newly purchased KAO Prettia Soft Bubble Hair Color ($14.99) in the color Sweet Pink.
The dye bottle comes with a pump head, which turns the liquid hair dye into foam bubbles. I have quite short hair right now so a whole bottle is really more than enough. From my experiences, hair length below chest or extremely thick hair may requires 1 1/2 to 2 bottles. Remember to toss away the left over product after use because most hair dye are meant to be one time use only. I clipped out a tutorial from the Prettia website to give you a better understanding of how the bubble hair dye works.
I love the beautiful result and the easy process of using it. There is absolutely no dripping or mess. The bubble texture is easy to apply and spreads color evenly all over the head. Due to my dark hair color, the color payoff did not turn out as bright as I had expected, although it is very decent. This will definitely be something that I will repurchase. I like it much more than the traditional kind of hair color.

Sparkling Beauty Secret : Is Your Skin Thirsty ?
Hydration is the key to achieving that perfect skin no matter what type of skin you have. Here is just a quick list of some of the most popular hydration ingredients you can find in skincare products. Look out for these when you are shopping for a good moisturizer.
- Glycerub
- Hyaluronic Acid : The most popular and powerful hydration ingredient.
- Collagen : Widely used in facial masks. After we hit mid 20s, our body's collagen will start to decrease. Thus, it is very important that we use supplements such as masks or collagen powder to fill in what you lost.
- D-Penthenol
- NMF
- Urea : Another popular ingredient. It is commonly used in Asian cosmetic products.
- Alpha Hydroxy Acid : Also known as AHA, which is widely used in peels. AHA is also beneficial if used at moderate level. Overdose can cause harmful damages to the skin.

Dear Dejavu Creamed Nail Off, Thank You For Being So Nice To My Nose
I'm usually not a fan of strong scents from most nail polish removers, so I am always on a mission to find an alternative that is less harsh to my nose. Recently on SASA.com, I came across the Dejavu Creamed Nail Off ($8.40), which is a very intriguing product compares to traditional nail polish removers. Unfortunately, the product has been discontinued on both SASA and the Dejavu website. But I have been spotting this at my local Japanese grocery stores, so if you are interested, try your luck there.
Dejavu is famous for its Imju Fiberwig Mascara ($24), which claims to be the #1 selling mascara in Japan.
Dejavu is famous for its Imju Fiberwig Mascara ($24), which claims to be the #1 selling mascara in Japan.
More about the brand : Imju is one of the leading cosmetic brands in Japan, belonging to Pias Group. Imju always creates the products with innovation and differentiation. What I especially love about this nail polish remover is that it has no noticeable scent, which is much preferable to me than other regular liquid removers. The process of using this product is a bit longer because you have to wait a few minutes for the removing cream to work. However, the result is definitely worth the wait. Remember to always use a hand cream afterward because the remover does makes the nails quite dry and flaky. Now, let me demonstrate how the cream works.
- Please forgive my nasty looking nails. As you can see, I need to get rid of the cracked nail colors.
- Squeeze a moderate amount of the cream remover on each nails. Spread it out to cover the entire area. Wait for a 2-3 minutes and wipe off the excess cream.
- You got your clean nails back. The whole process is very easy, and there is absolutely no rubbing involved.

Dear Brush Junkies (Part 2)
We should and need to clean our makeup tools on a regular basis. Research studies have shown that an unwashed sponge is even dirtier than the toilet, meaning that there are millions of germs on it for sponges and brushes are the perfect places for these bad guys to grow.
To clean makeup brushes for both synthetic and natural hair:
Dear Brush Junkies is a two part blog post in which I talk about how to maintenance and clean your makeup tools such as brushes and sponges. I recommend that you check out part 1 first before reading this second part.
To clean makeup brushes for both synthetic and natural hair:
- Wet the brush with lukewarm water and put some baby shampoo on the hair part. Do NOT use a separate conditioner afterward because the conditioner will smooth the hair so much that it will affect the brush's ability to grab onto powder products.
- Do NOT rub the brush very hard. Just gently rub it back and forth following the hair's direction.
- Use paper towel to squeeze out excessive water.
- Air day or blow dry. Do NOT leave the brush under direct sunlight becasuse the uv rays will damage it. Really big/thick brushes should take at least 2 days to fully air dry. Smaller/thinner brushes should be fine just over night.
The above tutorial works with most makeup brushes; however, certain ones such as lip brushes need special attention. Do NOT let your lip brush touches water because the bristles will lose elasticity. Instead, use lip balm (NOT too waxy kind) or lotion to clean it.
- Dip the lip brush in a lip balm and gently brush it back and forth.
- Wipe off excessive lip balm with paper towel. Then dip it in lip balm again. Repeat this process until there is no more product on the brush.
Some people clean their lip brushes with olive oil, but the problem is that we have to wash it afterward with water to get rid of the oil. This is NOT good because our lip brushs' bristles should not touch water.
So far, we talked about how to deep clean our brushes. Deep Cleaning should be done at least once a month and should be more frequent depends on how often you use your makeup tools. However, it is a time consuming process, and most of us simply do not have the time to do this everyday. This is when spot cleaning comes in. Spot cleaning is mostly used by makeup artists at work when they need to clean brushes immediately between clients. I also use spot cleaning when I need to use the same brush for another color, so I don't mix the shades. Remember, spot cleaning can NOT completely clean your brushes. This is just a quick alternative when we don't have the time to wash our tools.
There are different brush cleansers that can be used to spot clean. I use the MAC Brush Cleaner ($11).
More about the product : This one product will clean, disinfect and condition the brush fibers so that brushes will last longer. It is convenient to use and is specifically designed to extend the life of high quality brushes. Brush Cleanser leaves your brushes smelling fresh and clean, and helps shorten their drying time.It is a very popular choice among makeup artists and beauty junkies; however, many are not using it correctly. A lot of people just spot clean the brush with the MAC cleanser and use it after the brush is dry. But, the MAC cleanser is NOT meant to be used as dry cleanser, meaning it needs to be rinsed afterward. An experienced makeup artist will say the same thing. And if you read the back of the MAC cleanser package, it does say "Rinse well". Alternatively, there are also brush cleansers out there that don't require this.
Everyone has a different way to clean their makeup tools. As long as we follow the general rules, we should be fine. Remember, these tools will be with you a lot longer than makeups, so please take good care of them. A well maintained brush and sponge help you create that flawless look. And always remember that moderation is the key. Over washing and under maintenance are both very damaging.

The best way to solve this problem is to throw out old sponges on a regular basis; however, this is not economical or practical. But if we were to do so, we should change our sponges when:
- the edge of the sponge starts to break
- the sponge is losing its elasticity
If we don't want to keep buying new sponges all the time, well maintainence can definitely prolong the life of our makeup tools. For example, if the sponge is still in pretty good shape, all we need to do is clean it and then we can reuse it. We can clean sponges with:
- bar soap
- body wash
- hand soap
- Shampoo
When washing sponges and puffs, remember to always use lukewarm water. Do NOT use hot water because the high temperature will damage the sponge.
- Soak the sponge in water and put some cleanser on it.
- Do NOT keep rubbing it back and forth. Gently squeeze the sponge and dip it in clean water. Repeat this process until there is no more color/product coming out.
- Put the sponge under running water for a bit to make sure we completely rinsed off everything.
- Use paper towel to gently squeeze out excessive water.
- Air day or blow dry. Do NOT put the sponge directly under sunlight because the uv rays will damage the sponge and its elasticity.
Stay tune for the second part, where I will talk about how to maintenance your makeup brushes.

Paul & Joe Whitening Serum Is The Key To A Pale Summer
There has always been questions as to why most Asian women are obsessive with whitening and brightening their skin. This is simply due to cultural differences and a different perspective on beauty. In ancient Asian societies, tanned skin implies that the person is not wealthy so he/she has to work under the sun. Affluent and upperclasss women get to stay indoor. In modern Asian societies, darker tones mean that you either like tanned skin or you are not taking good care of you skin. For me, I love to stay pale because I simply don't think I look good with darker tones.
I've had my fair share of trying out whitening products. Some work, and some don't. But what I learned is that whitening and brightening is not an over night work. Anything that promises you a brighter face instantly is either lying or contains harmful ingredients. A good and effective whitening product should gradually change and improve your skin tone. My favorite whitening product so far is the Paul & Joe Whitening Serum ($45).

My favorite whitening product so far is the Paul & Joe Whitening Serum ($45).
More about the product : The faint, pleasing scent you'll notice in the products of Paul & Joe Beaute's skin care line is a natural bouquet inherent to a plant that is used as an active ingredient. This refreshing, natural scent makes using the product highly enjoyable, and that in turn serves to enhance the sensation of the skin care's results. With the relaxing and refreshing properties of orange flower water and the mood-lifting effects of orange oil, your skin care routine will become a time of blissful rejuvenation.
It has a very light texture and the signature Paul & Joe scent. Although this is a serum, it is extremely easy to blend and absorbs instantly. Using this both in the morning and at night for everyday, the bottle lasted me a little more than 4 months. You won't be able to see instant effect from this product; however, you should start seeing your skin color change after half bottle. By the time I finished the whole product, I can definitely tell an obvious difference in my skin color. I got lighter by about a whole foundation shade. What I especially love about this is the face that most whitening products tend to be a bit drying for the face, but this is very moisturizing, even for the cold Winter months.

Sparkling Beauty Secret : How To Apply Base Makeup
When I first started wearing makeup, I had no idea what to put on my face. This is what I want to talk about in this post. I believe putting on base makeup in the right order is very important because it helps you achieve that perfect look.
Step 1: Sun Protection
Often, people get confuse about when they should put on sunblock. Some use it after primer and foundation, and some use it in between. Both ways are actually wrong. Sunblock should be the first step in your face makeup routine because you need to apply sunblock when there is NO powder products on your face. This way, the sunblock can stick to your skin to protect it.
Step 2: Primer
This is optional because not everyone uses primers (but you should to help your makeup last longer). However, if you do, this should be the second step in your makeup routine. When applying primer, pat in the primer instead of rubbing it onto your face so it would not affect/destroy the previous layer of sunblock that you just put on.
Step 3: Pore Minimizing Primer
This is also optional because many don't need it, but if you do, pore minimizing primer should come after the regular primer. When applying this, gently smooth it over the area where you need to cover your pores. You should NOT rub it back and forth because this actually just rubs the primer away. You should start with your nose area and gently move in an outward direction.
Step 4: Foundation
If you use liquid foundation, this should be your next step after primer. I'm not going to go into details about applying foundation because there are many ways to do it.
Step 5: Concealer
You can use concealer before or after your liquid foundation. There is no absolute correct way to apply it. However, I choose this as step 5 because I recommend using concealer after your liquid foundation. This way, you can see which area is not covered well with your foundation and conceal them with a concealer. This prevents you from putting on too much makeup so it won't look too heavy.
Step 6: Powder
Powder products should always be your last step because whatever you put on after this will not really stick to your skin. I recommend using a setting powder as the last step to set your base makeup so it will last longer. If you really need some good coverage, you could also substitute the regular setting power with a powder foundation.
So that is the proper way of applying base makeup for your face. Of course, everyone is different so you could definitely change it a bit to fit your needs. But, this should be the general guideline. I hope this is helpful. If you have any questions, please comment below or e-mail me.

Etude House Eye Glow Pencil : Not Glamerous For Oily Eyelids
If you have ever visited an Etude House store, you'll notice that it is like a barbie house. The store is full of pink stuff, and all their sales girls wears cute little pink skirt. Etude House is one of the biggest Korean cosmetic brands. Unfortunately, I've had some really bad experiences while shopping in some of their stores in Korea. Plus, I've always thought that their products have cute packaging but not really effective. If you want to try some Korean brands, I would recommend Skin Food or The Face Shop.
I got this Eye Glow Pencil ($14) last year in Korea. It is an eye liner with subtle shimmer, but the shimmer is so subtle that when you actually wear it, you can't really tell that there is shimmer. It just looks like a regular black eyeliner. It is really creamy and goes on smoothly. I love the texture but unfornately, it is not something for my oily lids. It smudges like crazy. Even if I use a base and use an eyeshadow to set the liner, it still smudges right after I put it on. The only way I can actually use this is to use it as a base for a dramatic look, which kind of defeats the purpose of an eyeliner.

Borghese Fango Active Mud For Face And Body : Queen of Face Masks
I love to pamper my face with facials and masks, especially deep cleansing ones. I was introduced to Borghese when I first got into skincare. The brand is famous for its mud masks, which come in various colors and target different types of skin. The Fango Active Mud for Face and Body ($33.50 ~ $61) is a little harsh for some skin, so if you have really sensitive or dry skin, I recommend you to try the Fango Delicato Active Mud for Delicate Dry Skin ($33.50 ~ $61).
This mask has always been and will always be a necessity in my skincare routine. The hefty price tag may not seem friendly at first but I promise you that it works wonders to the skin. Plus, using the mask about once per week, the big jar usually lasts me a little more than 6 months. I have never tried it on my body, so I can not comment on how that works. However, I absolutely love using it on my face. You will see your pores shrink instantly, and your face will be the cleanest and smoothest you have ever felt. During the first few uses, you will experience a bit tangling sensation. This is because the mask is doing its work. The dryer your skin is, the stronger tangling feeling you will experience. The sensation does not hurt but I will say that it is definitely not tolerable to everyone. If you are not sure about this, I suggest you going to one of Borghese's cosmetic counters and have them try the mask on you before actually buying it. This deep green one is ideal for people with combination and oily skin. If you have sensitive or dry skin, Borghese also has specific masks that target your problem areas.
More about the product : Our exclusive mineral-enriched mud mask is sourced from Tuscany's volcanic hills. It energizes and nourishes skin cells on the face and body. Special absorbing action unclogs pores, eliminates dead skin cells and detoxifies impurities. Skin feels comfortably hydrated, firmer and invigorated.

Intro Guide To Basic Skincare
These are some of the essential skincare products that I currently use in my everyday skincare routine. Everyone's routine is different, but I believe these products should be the basic for everyone because they do amazing things to your skin
Face Wash: Philosophy Purity Made Simple ($20 - 8 oz)
Everyone needs a good face cleanser, and the Purity Made Simple by Philosophy is one of my favorites. It cleans your face and removes makeup (even waterproof). When I have really heavy makeup on, I still use a makeup remover before this. But, usually I just use the Purity Made Simple, and it gets everything off. It leaves a silky feeling afterward without making my face feeling oily.
Eye Cream: Clinique All About Eyes ($28.50 - 0.5 oz)
Although I don't really see any huge difference in my eye area, it does keep my eye area well moisturized and has a light texture. It would be even better if it has spf because I like to use products with spf in the morning since sunlight can really damage our eye area skin.
Face Moisturizer: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel ($24 - 4.2 oz)
I have oily skin, and this product really moisturize my skin and keeps my skin from being too oily.
Have you guys tried these skincare products before? What is your experience with them? Or may be you have other recommendations for me?

Review Policy
A large part of this blog is product reviews. Majority of the products and services that I review and mention on this blog is purchased with my own fund. Occasionally, Sparkle Midori is very fortunate to be given opportunities to try out free or discounted products and services from companies and PR agencies for blog consideration. In these situations, I am not obligated to review or mention them on this blog. Blog content, including reviews, is solely decided and controlled by me. No products, services, or companies can guarantee product reviews for any reasons. Sparkle Midori also does not accept any paid advertisement or endorsement. All links on the blog is provided to readers for informational purposes, and Sparkle Midori does not receive any money compensations for displaying these links. As I have repeated many times, all content on this blog is my honest opinion from personal experiences. Please be ensured that a product or service being free or discounted does not influence my view on it, and thus, does not influence my reviews. When I review or mention a product, service, or company that I received for free or discounted, that information is disclosed in the post. If you ever have any questions or concerns about a certain review or my policy, please contact me.
