Sparkling Beauty Secret : Cleansing Oil Good And Bad
Cleansing oil and oil based makeup removers are some of the most effective ways to take off makeups, but how much do you know about your cleansing oil? Today, I will share with you all some of my own tips at choosing the right one for you.
Personally, I don't usually use oil based products because I don't really enjoy oily feeling on my face. Plus, I have found other non-oil based makeup removers to be just as effective as cleansing oil. However, for heavy makeup girls out there, oil products can be your best friend and a shortcut to an ultra clean face.

Most people who face problems with oil products often encounter below :
- Acne
- Oily scent
- Sensitive reaction
There are a few tips that we can use when picking cleansing oil so we don't have to worry about negative consequences as the ones listed above.
- People with dry or sensitive skin should use cleansing oils with minimal amount of emulsifiers. Vise versa, oily girls like myself should pick the ones with high concentration of emulsifiers.
- High concentration of emulsifiers means that the cleansing oil will be easier to be mixed with water. The easier it is, the less oily feeling it will leave on your face so this is ideal for oily skin. Emulsifiers allow water to trap the oil inside and to carry away all the dirt and makeups on your skin. The more emulsifiers a cleansing oil contains, the better it is at removing products, but these stronger ones can also be more irritated to sensitive skin and may cause dry skin.
- Many cleansing oils contain Mineral Oil, which is a harmful ingredient, although the name sounds otherwise. Mineral Oil can stuck pores and cause canes and other problems for our skin. Instead, try using vegetable oil based products.
There are also a few ingredients we should try to avoid when purchasing a cleansing oil
Benzyle Alcohol, Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), Sodiu, hydroxide, Patassium Hydroxide, Triethanol Amine, Amino Methyl Propanol (AMP), Isopropyl Myristate (IPM), Isopropyl Isotearate, Octyl Stearate
And one last tip to remember, only use cleansing oil first on dry face and always remember to thoroughly emulsify it.

I'm using the very same Shu Uemura cleansing oil and it's doing a great job. I would like to try Fancl next. :D Thanks for the detailed write-up.

Congrats on winning the awesome prize!
I love cleansing oil, I use the Shu Uemura A/O (green) one. It has mineral oil but it has not caused me any skin troubles like the DHC oil. I want to try the pink one, it's supposed to be good for oily skin like mine and it's so cute!

Very informative!
I'm currently trying the orange shu uemura one for dry skin. It's okay, comparable to the MAC one but MAC smells lemony fresh which I like! I just reviewed it if you are interested =)

Great post, I love getting informed. I need a cleansing oil with less emulsifiers, like you! I actually wrote a post on synthetic ingredients in products before.. including sodium lauryl sulfate :) guess we have some things in common besides animals

Hello girl
Thank you for the love :)
I've only used one cleansing oil that is from Shills (a Taiwan brand)
and it worked pretty well but I still prefer cleansing milk.
and Shu Uemura's too pricey for me. I'm saving for MAC brushes. lol :D
Great review, btw! I'm following back :D

hi thanks for the comment on my blog!
ive tried the blue cleansing oil from shu but i really didnt like how it felt on my skin afterwards. i guess i cant deal with the idea of putting oil on my already oily face. haha.

I have oily skin so I also dont like the thought of using cleansing oils. I've been using the Olive Cleanser by St. Ives, and its worked wonders. It's only 4.99 and it removes my makeup quite well.

I want to try a shu cleansing oil one day :) A lot of people says it works good if you use it right so I'm gonna look for tutorials.. ahah :D
and thank you for following! I'm going to be following back ^_^ and as for the box of potions, even if I don't like it that much, I'll just suck it up and use it unless it breaks me out or something. haha, I always suck it up and use stuff I don't like even though I know my appearance doesn't look like I would want it xD I guess I don't really care what people would think :)

Interesting write up. I love using cleansing oil for my face because in my opinion, i do tend to use heavy make up.
Shu Uemura's too expensive for me so I tend to use ZA cleansing oil. Been using it for years and I'm still loving it.
I'll keep an eye out for the ingredients stated, Thanks~!

Great entry! I've only recently started using an oil cleanser and to be honest I didn't really know what to look for and what to expect.
I don't really like the feeling of oil on my face either even though I have dry skin. I would like to give cleansing waters a try though.

Hi! Thanks for stopping by :) You have an awesome blog here! I love your thorough post about it, I use cleansing oil too! And I have a few Q's, how do we know that there are more emulsifiers? I use the Shiseido one (my first) and it's okay but also because I shower and wash my face afterwards. And at first, I didnt even know I had to emulsify it lol so I would just try to wipe it off with a cotton and go jump in the shower (which I guess would then emulsify what was left on my face). Right now I'm using cold cream to remove makeup because I left my cleansing oil at my mother in laws place, and so far so good. I guess if I just take a shower/wash my face afterwards, the acne thing won't really apply? I dunno :)

the shu oil sounds like a great product, i have never used cleansing oil before but keep hearing good things about it!
October 9, 2009 at 3:37 PM
thank you guys
looks like a lot of people are using Shu Uemura's cleansing oil...I wish they could be a little bit cheaper.
@Minoueel and @p chan: I also heard good things about the Fancl one but I still have so much left in my Shu one..-.-" Im never gonna be able to finish it.
@Lisa: agree. I also use a face cleanser afterward.
@Fifi: I heart Shills stuff are really good, but the only place I found selling them is payeasy?! forgot the name of the site but it's a site from Taiwan. I wish I could find it in the states because I really want to try it.
@Yumeko: sorry to heard that they don't work for you. May be you could try cleansing gel. They are a lot milder than oil.
@Clearly Beautiful Blog: i love st. ives, especially their scrub. But Ive never tried a cleanser from them. May be I'll pick on up next time. Thanks for letting me know.
@lindah: thanks for the following girl. I'm trying to sell things from the Box of Potion on ebay...LOL...cuz i really don't want to keep them.
@MilknCookiie: hey girl. If you really don't like the feeling of oil, try cleansing gel because they are pretty good and doesn't feel oily. Ive tried one with mint before and it feels really refreshing.

@Becks: good questions because a lot of people are not using their cleansing oil correctly.
First, you need to have a dry face. Put cleansing oil on your face and gently rub it around so it can properly dissolve all the makeup. Then add water to your face little by little (i guess you can also just wash your face but I always do it little by little so I know it thoroughly emulsify). Then you will notice that the "oil" starts to turn white. Usually after 2-3 times of adding water, i then just wash everything off.
When the cleansing oil turn white, that is when you know it emulsified. Now the problem Ive came across with before is that if just wash/shower my face right after I put the oil on my face, I notice that it doesn't completely wash everything off and my face feel oily. Thats why at the beginning I really hate cleansing oil because I don't understand why someone would use it since you can't wash off the oil feeling. Now i know this is simply because you didn't let it completely emulsify.
and how about how much emulsifiers there is in a certain oil. There is really no way to tell exactly because companies don't put that info on the product. However, if you use a few, you will get a sense which one has more. Some cleansing oil takes a lot of water and time for it to turn white. Some doesn't. The less water and faster the oil turns white, the more emulsifiers it has.
wow..this is a long reply....LOL hopefully this helps.

Hi Angela,
I finally got some time to check your blog. It's truly excellent: one of the first posts already is so useful and informative. I've been thinking about making my own cleansing oil of some vegetable oil and emulsifier (Polysorbate 80 most likely) and your info about the different quantities and proportions comes truly in handy, so thanks a bunch. :)
About your answer to @Becks:
I use L'Occitane's Almond Apple cleansing oil (as you know :) and emulsifiers are pretty high on the list, which is probably why it hasn't broken me out but has made several dry-skinned friends of mine complain about its drying effect.
I guess one can always check the INCI list of the product, eliminate any known ingredients (the oils, fruit or herbal extracts, colorants, fragrance, preservatives) and check the rest on the Internet. It'll soon turn out which ones are emulsifiers, and if they are among the first few on the list, then the product contains them in a large enough quantity.
Anyway, congratulations on your wonderful blog! You've got yourself another follower. :)
Take care!
Love,
Izar

Just to let you know, the cleansing oil that you named as a favorite has one of the ingredients that you warned people to look out for. In face, most cleansing oils have some of these ingredients, and you can't really avoid them. Not trying to cause trouble, as I also like the Shu Uemura cleansing oils and use them.

@Anonymous: Thanks for the commend, and yes, I am aware of what you said. If you look at some of the most popular makeup and skincare products out on the market, chances are they contain some of the ingredients that are not good for our skin. However, many still use them.
It is quite funny sometimes when I see "gurus" say things like "don't buy makeups from China or Thailand because there may be harmful ingredients or chemicals in there." But the truth is if you look at the ingredient list of some of the big brands out there, they may shock you. For example, next time, read the ingredient list on Nars Laguna, it looks horrible. Sorry...Im off topic a bit....LOL
But my point is yes, I agree with you. I admit sometimes I do use products, knowing that there are ingredients in them that are not good, but I still use them (try not to use so often). I think moderation is the key. But I think it is still good for people to know what ingredients are bad so that at least we know what to look out for.
Thanks lot for the comment and I always love opinions that are not just the usual sweet ones. But next time, you don't have to be anonymous because I promise I won't bite...LOL
PS: this totally inspires me to do a full post about this issue. If anyone has any opinions about this, definitely leave a comment below or e-mail me because I think it is a very interesting topic.

awesome post!! at first i didn't know and put on the cleansing oil after i put water, which now i think is quite silly but i read somewhere else for putting it on dry skin and i did but i don't think it really worked for me somehow, i had to wash it thoroughly again with another deep cleansing wash. hmm, it's my first time with cleansing oil though. so i find this really helpful, thank you.
